Install Ventrilo server in Windows 7

Download the version of ventrilo server and client that matches your operating system at http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php and install it. You will not need to install the client if you plan to use the computer as the server only.

After installing, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\VentSrv and open “ventrilo_srv.ini” with notepad.

Add a name for your server, set Auth to 0 (optional), and create a password for the Admin and Password fields and save the file.

Now you need to forward port “3784” in your router. Go to your Start Menu and type “cmd”. Enter “ipconfig” and press enter.

Make note of your Default Gateway and IP addresses. The default gateway address will be the address for your router.

Now go to your browser and enter the Default Gateway Address. This will take you to your routers homepage. There are many types of routers out there so the screenshot below is just an example. In our router the port forwarding options are under “virtual Servers” but more than likely yours will be under “Ports”, “Forwarding”, or “Port Forwarding”. The screen however once you select the correct option is generally the same for most routers.

The description can be anything you want. Enter “3784” in both the port fields and set the port type to TCP or TCP&UDP. Save your settings.

Now we need to allow Ventrilo.exe and ventrilo_srv.exe in the Windows Firewall. This is the trick to getting the server to work in Windows 7. Click on “Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall”

Next go back to your browser, go to http://www.whatismyip.com/, and make note of your ip address. This is your public IP and will be used as the Ventrilo server address.

Open the Ventrilo server from the “Start” “All Programs Menu”. If everything is configured properly your screen should look like this:

Next we need to configure the client. Open it from the “Start” “All Programs” menu. Add your name and the public IP you got from whatismyip.com in the Hostname or IP section, enter your password, and press OK

You should now be able to connect!

Install .rpm files in Ubnutu with Alien

Many times we Ubuntu users run into files that aren't as simple to install as double clicking, as is the case with deb's and exe's. The Adobe flash plug-in is a good example. That's where Alien come in. Just copy and paste the following in a terminal and you're on your way.

sudo apt-get install alien dpkg-dev debhelper build-essential

For this next part you will need to change to the directory where you downloaded the file. If you're using Firefox the file is most likely in your Downloads folder unless you changed the default save location. When you open the terminal you should be at: "username@computername:~$" from here just type "cd Downloads" (don't forget to capitalize the "D") then type "dir" to find your file. If your prompt looks different type "cd .." and repeat until you get to "username@computername:/$". after that just type "cd home", press enter, then tpye "cd username", then type "cd Downloads". You should now be in the correct directory. Next copy and paste the following:

sudo alien packagename.rpm

The file should now be converted to a ".deb". However, Alien changes the file name so you will need to type "dir" again to see the newly created file.

From here you can either enter the command below or simply browse to the Downloads folder and double click the newly created deb file.

sudo dpkg -i packagename.deb
