HP Slate now available and running Windows 7 Pro

I have not seen one of these in person but after reading some reviews and looking at the specs on HP's website it seems to me that the $799 would be better put toward a decent laptop. The tablet has an Intel Atom processor and is really nothing more than a touch screen netbook which is to be expected for a small tablet. One feature I really like however is the ability to use it as both a touch screen device and with a stylus. Still I'm not paying $799 for it when I can buy the small 11.6 Alienware m11x gaming laptop for the same price. In my opinion this is probably a good tablet but way to expensive. For this price you could buy a 16G iPad and a netbook.

Virus removal and keeping your computer clean

Working as one of three network admins our department gets a lot of calls from virus related issues. There are few things we dread more than getting a call from a sales rep who has hosed his or her computer with viruses. The two things I always hear is: I don’t know how I got this” and “how do I keep this from happening”. Viruses are easy to get and picking one up can be as simple as clicking a link on a search engine. There are many other ways to infect your computer file downloads being at the top. File sharing programs like Limewire are great ways to infect yourself. If you must download  whatever from a program like this I suggest moving over to a torrent application and download your files this way. Torrent search engine sites like btjunkie often have comments and virus reporting. If the file is infected many times someone will say so in the comments. However, always scan the file as soon it is downloaded ( I’ll talk about how to do this on down the page) and don’t click on anything but the torrent download link while you’re on the site. Remember when you venture into the file sharing realm you’re in dangerous waters in more ways than just virus infection. The number one thing you can do to keep from getting infected is to pay attention to your searching habits. This is so important because hitting malware infested sites is one of the easiest and most common ways to get a virus. Here is a list of 5 searches (in no particular order) that will get you into trouble fast:
1. Cooking recipes
2. Free online games
3. Screensavers/Desktop Wallpapers
4. Ringtones
5. Coupons
If you come across a site that greets you with a pop-up warning stating that you are infected, wanting you to run their scan, or install their software, you need to close your browser and run anti-malware/anti-virus software as soon as possible. Whatever you do don't click anywhere on the pop-up window. The best way to close your browser in these cases is to kill the process in Task Manger. Right click on an open area of Taskbar and select "Start Task Manger". You can also press CTRL+ALT+DEL but using the Taskbar option saves a little time and you don't have to wait for your screen to refresh.
taskmanager
Once you're in Task Manger click the "Processes" tab and find all instances of your web browser. Firefox will appear as "firefox.exe" and Internet Explorer will appear as "iexplorer.exe". I'm not sure about the others but you should be able to find them easy enough, Right click on the process and select "End process".taskmanager2
I want to add that you should also never have to “install” a Wallpaper. Desktop wallpaper is nothing more than an image file and if the file downloaded is an “.exe” I would delete it. The best way to get wallpaper is to do a Google search for a wallpaper whatever subject it may be and click the images link at the top of the page. On the left side of the results you can select between multiple size settings. Find an image you like “Right imageslinkClick”  it and select “Save image/picture as”. Watching your surfing helps a great deal in prevention but you’ll still need a few tools in your box in order to keep your machine clean.
There are  three types of programs I recommend installing and keeping updated on your PC throughout your everyday computing. The first of course is an anti-virus program. I’ll start by saying (in my professional opinion) please don’t waste your money on Norton, McAfee, or any other product that you have to pay for! There are two things I hate about these types of programs. First you have to pay to keep them updated and the second is they kill your pc’s performance with all of their real-time processes that run in the background. I know that many people may disagree with my opinion on this but I’ve been working in this field for 10 years and I still stand by it. Programs like Norton have internet security suits that are constantly monitoring your system for malicious  software attacks and yes this good but it’s not worth slowing your computer down and paying for a subscription. Windows has its own built in firewall so you don’t need a second. Besides a firewall does you no good against a file you have downloaded or a popup you may have clicked on while browsing that coupon page. If you feel safer with Norton or McAfee with their added features that’s fine I just hate to see people throw their money away on something they don’t need. So what do you use instead? Personally I like AVG Free Edition and Avast Free Edition anti-virus. Both are free including updates and can be downloaded from download.com. Since I mentioned it, download.com is one of the safest places to download software. They have a search box at the top of their page and your results can be arranged by pay, trial, and free software. AVG and Avast have pro versions that offer more features that you really don’t need and AVG also has a corporate business version that they charge for. That’s how they make their money. The basic free versions is all you need and I’ve been using AVG for years and it’s great. I also like Avast which I’m using on my home laptop now. Anti-virus programs are good for scheduled scans and running when you think you may be infected but they don’t always get everything. The second program I suggest is Spybot-Search and Destroy. This is a good utility to run to clean up things like tracking cookies and other spyware which is a little different than viruses. Note that Spybot is not an ant-virus program and should not be used in place of one. The third utility is one that has saved me many times and it’s called Malwarebytes. This utility is used after you have been hit and need to remove the virus. After you run Malwarebytes I would run your Anti-virus and make sure it comes up clean as well. You may also want to try reverting back to an earlier restore point using System restore. After restoring run these three programs just to make sure your clean. If the system restore doesn’t work and Malwarebytes and your anti-virus continue to show infections I would turn off system restore because many times the virus is still in these restore points even after the scan. Doing this will delete all your restore points which have been infected. You can always turn it back on later and it will begin to create new ones. If you’ve been infected by a virus that disables Malwarebytes you will need to copy the install file you downloaded to a USB drive and boot Windows into Safe Mode by pressing F8 when the computer boots. You should be able to reinstall it once in Safe Mode. If you do this however make sure it’s the latest version of Malwarebytes you can get because you won’t be able to update the program in Safe Mode. If you continue to have trouble you can try using a utility like rkill which finds and stops the running service allowing for removal.
Overall remember to watch your surfing habits, install the programs I mentioned above and make sure to update before every scan, and scan those file you have downloaded which your not sure of before opening or running them. This can easily be done with both AVG and Avast by right clicking the file and choosing Scan in the context menu.

Skullcandy Lowrider SC

OK, I've been a little bored this weekend can't you tell? I'm writing a post about about cheap headphones that you can buy at Target. Actually they're not all that cheap. I think I paid like $42 for these things despite my better judgment to grab the Sony's (which were a little cheaper) on the rack next to them. Anyway, why are they $42? Because they're metallic blue, they have skulls on them, and they do look cool. Also, don't be fooled by the metallic color. There is no metal on them except for maybe some solder and wiring on the inside. So why did I buy them? Well I wanted a new pair of headphones and I like skulls. Overall I'm happy with them. They look different, sound well, and do provide some noise canceling. They're also comfortable and they do fold making it easier to throw in my backpack and take to work for those long hours in the server room. The noise canceling definitely comes in handy while I'm in there but again these don't offer much. If you're thinking about buying a pair I would say that the Sony's on the shelf close by would probably be a better choice. I don't think these would hold well being tossed around or kept in a backpack. The Skullcandy website shows guys wearing these their on skateboards and bikes. Yeah, I would give them until the end of the first day under those conditions. These things feel like they could be broken very easily but hay, they also come with the Skullcandy logo cardboard stencil. Bottom line, your paying for the look and that's about it. I do like mine for whatever it's worth though.

PS3 3D Update causes issues with some Blu-ray movies

Earlier today I put my Sunshine Blu-Ray movie (it's a sci-fi space movie for those of you who haven't seen it and a good one at that) and during the second chapter the PIP commentary window pops up at the lower right corner of the screen. I didn't remember selecting this option so I go back to the root menu and try playing it again from the beginning to no avail. After fighting with this for some time I turned to Google to see if anyone else had experienced this. I found several links to other pages where people had posted similar problems one of which a person had posted the same problem with the same movie http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Updates/Firmware-Blu-Ray-bug/m-p/46244849 . From what I've read it's an issue with the last update we received. I've tried dumping the Blu-ray cache, which I had none for this particular movie, and fighting with the disc menu. Hopefully Sony will fix this in the next update but for now I'll have to put this movie back on the shelf.

Keyboard time savers

You use your keyboard to type but did you know that you can almost completely navigate through Windows without even touching the mouse? It's true that not using the mouse at all would make life difficult but these keyboard tips can some things much easier.

The tab key:

Use the tab key to switch between fields like those used for logins. Type your username and press the tab key to drop down to the password field. Also try pressing Enter instead of clicking the Submit, OK, Login, etc. buttons. Your hands are already on the keyboard while typing so why interrupt the flow by reaching for your mouse? Use Shift+Tab to tab backwards.

Searching:

Did you know there is a faster way of navigating through folders in Windows? If you're a pack rat and have tons of folders you can save yourself a lot of scrolling by simply typing the name of your folder. When you open a folder in Windows highlight any file or folder at the top and start typing the name of the file or folder you're looking for. This will take you straight to it or get you close. This takes some practice but once you get the hang of it you'll start doing it all the time

Use Backspace instead of your web browsers Back and Forward buttons

This one is simple. Want to go back a page? Just hit the backspace button. Shift+Backspace will take you forward a page.

Windows key shortcuts:

Windows Logo + D: Minimize all Windows

Windows Logo + F: Search Window

Windows Logo + R: Run menu

Windows Logo + Tab: 3D roll through of open applications (Vista & Windows 7 only)

Ctrl + Esc: Bring the Taskbar to the front of running full screen applications

Crtl + Z: Undo

Ctrl + X: Cut

Ctrl + C: Copy

Ctrl + V: Paste

Alt + Tab: Switch between running programs

Alienware m11x review

I started searching for a gaming laptop a few months ago and quickly discovered that there isn't a great deal to choose from. Even worse those that do exist are not cheap. Well this was a problem for me because I am cheap. I was determined to find a gaming machine under 1k dollars which I finally did. In the end after long research I decided to go with the Alienware m11x. So far I have been very happy with this small powerhouse. For $799 I didn’t expect it do as well as it has. My biggest concern was how it would run World of Warcraft and FPS’s. I was happy to see very decent frame rates at Ultra settings in WoW. At worst I’ll get 22fps in SW on a busy night and even that doesn’t last long after the area fully loads. I also installed the Modern Warfare 2 demo and it ran great at medium settings. I didn’t crank it up to see how far I could go before I started lagging but I’m sure it would have pushed much further with decent frame rates.
I purchased the Core 2 duo version of the m11x from Best Buy. There is now a second generation of the m11x available now with both i5 and i7 processors. However, you won’t be getting either of those models for $799 yet. Besides the processor change, the VGA port has been removed on the 2nd gens to add room for the faster processors. This isn’t really a big deal; however, if you’re planning to connect it to two external monitors this may pose a problem.  I’m not sure if you can run HDMI and Dell’s display port at the same time but if you can you may still be able to run your dual monitors. I haven’t tried multiple displays on mine yet but I have read that it can be done. I’m guessing however, that using the HDMI port will restrict the monitor connected to this port to a maximum of 1366x768. I may be totally wrong about this however. If anyone has tried this please post a comment below.
The m11x has two video cards which can be changed at any time by pressing FN + F6. This a cool feature because if you like to run on battery a lot you can flip over to the crappy Intel card to save battery life which is very good I might add. The other card is an NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M. The keyboard is illuminated and it’s much better than others I’ve seen. The colors can be changed and even set to pulse or morph slowly into multiple colors if you like. There are many options for color effects. I will point out that the color of the alien on the outside of the display cannot be change for the light comes from the backlight of the display unlike the 15 and 17 inches models which can be changed. There is also no illuminated ring around the track pad like that which is available on the larger models. Lastly the m11x has no optical drive but you can connect an external drive via USB.
Overall I have been very happy with this machine for the price. With 4GB of RAM and the 335M video card I’m able to play all the new games at medium settings or higher. I actually like the small size of the laptop which is a deal breaker for most people but if you don’t mind the 11.6 inch screen and being stuck with the 1366x768 resolution then I think you’ll be happy with it as well. You can always connect it to an external monitor if the screen starts to get to you. Remember though that a larger monitor will give you higher resolutions but your frame rates will suffer as you increase it. I haven’t purchased a monitor for it yet so I’m curious how it performs at higher resolutions so again if anyone has tried this please post it in the comments below. Also, if you are considering the m11x you may want to check amazon.com. When I bought mine they had it for the same price I paid for mine after tax at Best Buy with a larger HD. My impatience’s is what drove me to buy it at that store.

Available specs from Dell

Specs from Best Buy (The machine I purchased)

Specs from Amazon
I think this may be a better deal because it has a larger HD and free shipping. Remember that Best Buy will hit you with tax which you may not have to pay on Amazon making it about the same price but with 320GB HD instead of the 250 you get from BB.
